Over the last few months I’ve been involved in a very small way working to mark 75th anniversary the D-Day landings.
The D-Day Story (Museum) commissioned me to work with a community group in Portsmouth who wanted to create a history walk that showed the impact of D-Day and the second world world on the Portsmouth areas of Milton and Eastney.
Up to this point the group had focused on researching through local and national records. Together we looked at how we could turn their research into visual pieces. This led us to creating a booklet and wayfinder markers. The group also spent time updating their community website with walk maps, archival images as well as personal stories from the area.
We also made a very short film to help promote the project which you can see below.
In the week running up to the D-Day anniversary the booklets were distributed to local residents and businessess and the wayfinder markers were displayed in the streets and in local shops.
The D-Day Story Museum is well worth a visit it tells the story of what happened 75 years ago in a unique way that brings out the personal stories of soldiers and civilians.
